A total of 23 FOs (one Sorbetto has never been photographed, or blogged, but has been worn a lot).
Hits
Scout woven tee with 3/4 sleeves - it goes with everything and is super comfy. Win win.
Flops
Colette Violet blouse (x2) - I failed twice with this and then gave up. It helped me realise that though it's v cute, it's just not my style, and I need to really not get carried away by what others are making - I should stick to my own thing. Also, Colette patterns just don't work for me. I've sold all of my mine second hand on eBay (and made quite a decent return on them). But I've kept the Beignet skirt - I am still tempted to try it.Simplicity 2444 dress (unphotographed) - I talked the talk with this one, but just couldn't walk the walk. I made a muslin, tweaked the fit and had it looking lovely. Then somewhere between the muslin and the final version, something went wrong. So frustrating. Perhaps I over-fit it; perhaps the muslin fabric had more give than the fashion fabric; perhaps (and quite probably) I went up a whole dress size in the month between muslin and final. It makes me feel sad just thinking about it.
Darling Ranges dress (unphotographed) - 5 muslins, one hot mess. I gave up.
Banksia blouse (unphotographed) - I made a muslin, it didn't fit and I couldn't work out why so I gave up. It was soon after the Darling Ranges and 2444 disasters, so I didn't have the energy to deal with it. Also, I discovered the Scout Woven tee. But I will revisit the Banksia blouse in 2013.
2012: reflections
I didn't have any crazy or unrealistic plans when I started out this year. I wanted to make:- new PJs
- Colette Ginger (in olive brushed cotton twill)
- Colette Beignet (in navy needlecord)
- Colette Violet (in a Liberty lawn)
- Wiksten Tova shirt (in a brushed cotton)
- A dress for a wedding (*the failed 2444*)
Looking ahead
In 2013, I want to:- Work on gaining a better understanding of fit and how to tackle my particular fitting challenges. I'm going to contact my local Palmer-Pletch instructor and take a few workshops.
- Make a Sewaholic Minoru jacket.
- Maybe make the Colette Beignet skirt I've been talking about all this time!
- Knit a cardigan.
- Finish my quilt!
- Sew a dress (any dress).
- Get to grips with sewing knits.
I also want to STOP buying fabric unless I desperately need it!
And in a non-sewing-related aside, I really want to get into shape again. I spent my 20s being the thin girl who could eat cake all day and still be thin. Now that I'm approaching my mid-30s, I still love cake (and have developed a love for cheese), but boy do I pay for it. So instead of giving it up entirely, I'm just going to have to eat a bit less of it, and move a bit more. Also, I just feel unfit, and it's not a good feeling. So, I've bought some running shoes, and will start the Couch to 5K programme. But I won't bore y'alls with that here.
Happy 2013 folks!
speak soon

The elephant top is my favorite! Someday I'm going to find elephant fabric somewhere and make my own... I get the "unfit" feeling too - perhaps a little extra right now, after all of the eating I did last week! Good luck with Couch to 5K - I did it once (and then stopped altogether!) and I think it's a great way to ease into things.
ReplyDeletehaha - yes, I defintely feel "well fed" after the Xmas week! ;)
DeleteYou've had a great making year Shivani and I've loved following your progress. Your 2013 goals are totally doable, I know you'll smash them ;o) Good luck with the Couch to 5k programme...I've toyed with the idea myself before, but running always injures me :o(
ReplyDeletethanks Marie! I've had running injuries before, but my cousin (a GP) recommended this programme - apparently it reduces the chance of injury, so I'll let you know how I get on :)
DeleteOooh yes, please do keep us informed ;o)
DeleteYou've had some great makes, and I can't wait to see your work next year! Alas, I a also feeling unfit, but hate running - so I've taken up boxing instead. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteboxing! wow!!! I'm too scared to try that!
DeleteGood luck with Couch to 5K. It's a great program. I will definitely be looking to it when it's time.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you learn from your local Palmer-Pletch instructor! What a fabulous opportunity! And maybe we can get on a schedule and both make that Minoru. It's so on my list :)
ooo yes! let's be Minoru sewalong buddies!!
DeleteYou are so ready to take on the Biegnet! Looking forward to your makes in 2013 :D
ReplyDeleteYou had a totally successful year! I love how clearly your style comes through when you see everything together! Good luck with your 2013 goals! The Minoru is on my list, too. :)
ReplyDeletethanks Sonja! Can't wait to see your Minoru - bet it will be amazing :)
DeleteHappy New Year! So many FOs, I'm really impressed. My mum and I are thinking of getting a lesson from the same P-P instructor some time this year, so I'd love to hear how you get on.
ReplyDeletethanks Nina - happy new year to you too! I'll keep you posted on my progress with the P-P instructor :)
DeleteYou sew such lovely things, Shivani. You're a woman with great taste! You still have a figure I would kill for, but I've heard great things about Couch to 5K. My running has gone totally out of the window, but at least I'm still cycling - and doing lots of walking with Ella!
ReplyDeleteaw thanks Karen - too kind!
DeleteMethinks I need an Ella of my own!
Ooh, I really should check out the Tova, am in dire need of new tops. You've made some lovely things this year, the denim skirt is great.
ReplyDeleteI also realised this year that Colette patterns aren't for me, might ebay my Violet too since I also had 2 flops with it. Had you cut your patterns when you sold them?
Do try the Tova! It's a bit pricier as far as sewing patterns go (bit cheaper for the PDF), but I've made 3 (and another on the way), so it was definitely worth it for me :)
DeleteMy Colette patterns were cut but complete (I'd cut around the pattern pieces but all sizes were intact). I sold them all for over £10 each (which is astonishing, as they cost only a little bit more as new!)
Ooh, I love your wardrobe and it's always a treat to get reminded what you've made!! What another fab year of great makes and elephant fabric deployment! And your knitting puts mine to shame. Good luck with the running....
ReplyDeleteHi Shivani, well done on all your beautiful creations last year! I wish you all the best with ticking off all your aims for 2013, they sound very do-able. Hope to see you before long xxx
ReplyDeleteYou made so many lovely things - they look elegant and wearable. The couch to 5k sounds good - I recognise what you say as I used to be like that in my 20s too. My mainly cake based diet has taken a toll. I love your knitted elephant. :)
